Description
The Ka'iwi Channel Swim Race is the most dangerous long distance swim on the planet. This race is like no other. This is ultimate proving ground. Increased dangers of this event exist beyond typical ocean swim events including rapidly changing weather conditions, and absolute remoteness where assistance or rescue is NOT guaranteed and should not be depended on. Logistics are complex. Its best to think this is part race and part expedition.
Caution
This swim is not for anyone. Ka'iwi Channel is rightfully considered one of the most dangerous channels in the world and the ultimate decision to compete in this event should be heavily and carefully considered.
Escort Boats
The format of this race is 6 person and 2 person teams with mandatory support motorboats and mandatory individual escort for the periods inside the start and finish buoys. Approved individual escort crafts are kayaks, SUP, surfboards greater than 9 ft, canoe or by permission. No motorized or sail individual escorts are permitted.
Eligibility Requirements
1. All swimmers must be at least 18 years old by August 23, 2013.
2. All swimmers are cautioned that swimming the Ka'iwi Channel can be very challenging and potentially deadly due to winds and currents and other natural dangers. For this reason, all swimmers should be able to complete 2 miles in Open Water miles in under 75 minutes. If you have any doubts, please contact the Race Director, Jeff Kozlovich at kozhawaii@gmail.com.
3. All Swimmers must be currently registered with U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS). If you currently are not registered with USMS, you can register for this event and supply proof of USMS membership by August 1st. Foreign swimmers may compete if they are registered with their FINA-approved governing body (a copy of their registration card will be required). (Foreign swimmers do not require a USMS single-event registration.) A team shall be comprised of six swimmers or two swimmers. Teams can be comprised of a mix of USMS or FINA members.
